I migrated to Australia in 2017. Initially, I found the entire job-seeking process challenging – how to look for job, writing a CV, interview skills, creating LinkedIn profile and networking.
In September 2018, I attended a Lean In Inc’s workshop. The workshop not only helped me improve my job-seeking skills but also assisted me in understanding the important of soft skills such as dressing up for interview and body language as well as identifying the need to upgrade my skills.
The organisers were very co-operative and helpful throughout. It was in this session that I first came to know about volunteering and internship opportunities in Australia. We were introduced to Dress for Success Sydney. This helped boost my confidence and improved my interview skills. Our resumes and cover letters were reviewed by experts and helped fill any gap in the format followed in Australia. Networking with fellow job seekers gave me the support I was looking for in this new country and helped me share my ideas, learn new skills together and explore the job market. Also, sessions on finance helped me in the long run. So glad I didn’t miss this session 3.5 yrs back.
After attending the Lean In Inc workshop, I did several volunteering jobs as a Salesforce Administrator with a few not for profit organisations. Later, I got a job in a similar position.
I highly recommend Lean for immigrants who are actively looking for job opportunities, trying to make use of their skills and are seeking support in this foreign land.
